Reviews of Six And More  “Do Not Open!”

Alien 01/1996
Six And More -> Do Not Open! < CD / 14 skladieb; 68.28 min.
Na vydani “Do Not Open!” ich spolupracovalo pätnást.

SIX AND MORE
Six and More is not a band in the usual sense, not even an ensemble, but rather an occasional meeting of German electronic musicians who began playing together to record a sonic experiment. These musicians are: Gunter Schroth, Gerd Schedel, Wolfgang Foag, Karl F. Gerber, Robert Besch, Robert Frey, Jurgen Fritzsch-Schraud, Jens Groh, Fritz Henschke, Uta Hervol, Gero Kempf, Roman Lang, Andreas Nagl, Andreas Schosser and Uwe Zahn.
SIX AND MORE "DO NOT OPEN" Archegon
Six and More is a remarkable electronic musical experiment from Germany. Fifteen different synthesists have got together into an electronic orchestra to improvise. The result of these sessions has been gathered into a CD called "Do Not Open!". The origin of the project was developed in Berlin during the summer of 1992. The orientation of the 14 pieces included in this work tends to the experimentation with sounds, while exploring the sonic interaction among the improvisations on the part of each artist.

Very dramatic electro music. I don´t recommend this CD if you need music for relaxing, becuase while this CD is being turned on, you always cannot help but keep your ears open to the music and the room is full of kind of nervous atmosphere like a space horror movie. Scilent madness. Don´t listen to this if you are a hjeart patient.

Well, I suppose many of you know how much fun you can have twiddling knobs on synthesizers, but what about six or more people getting together and all doing just that?! Well, here you can witness the results, in a selection of improvisations and edited jams, featuring analogue and digital synths, effects, samplers, tapes, etc., with a music that´s at best atmospheric, vet so often recklessly chaotic. Interesting in parts indeed, but at 69 minutes worth it´s just too much! Alan Freeman

Do Not Open! (Archegon/Eigenvertrieb)
Eigenwillig, eigenwillig. Six And More Do Not Open! (ARCHEGON, GON 1002, CD, 1993)

ARCHEGON Six And More, “Do Not Open!” CD
“Do Not Open!” is the result of collective improvisation of at least six musicians involved in electronic music. The whole project was organised by Günter Schroth, a man behind label Archegon. This album contains 14 tracks that were recorded during improvisations held in München. All the tracks are live recordings without any postproduction, playbacks or overdubs. The musicians who took part are representatives of various electronic groups, e.g. Schultze & Schmidt, Ampzilla´s Delight, Ampersand, Decks Run Red and more. The result of their co-operation is the kind of experimental music that was produced by followers of Rock in Opposition movement and Recommended Records label. It´s quite, sometimes a little bit cacophonic music, with the touch of free jazz feeling. The whole conception of the album reminds me of Biota and Mnemonists porjects - the biggest difference is in the use of studio technics; for Biota the recording studio and its effects are the main musical instruments, Six And More participants use the studio technique just to record the result of improvisation. The ways are different, but the results similar. Six And More music is rather interesting than pleasant to listen. Beside the München session of Six And More there was another session in Berlin in 1992. The Berlin session is ready to be released during 1995. empee2

Six And More Do Not Open! Archegon Records
A modern collaboration of musicians take place here. it´s a collaboration of 15 various different components of electronic music in Germany. All the tracks here are just free collective, improvisations with live electronics making sonic space sounds. At some points you think you´re trapped in the mind of a video game. If you enjoy chaotic new and contemporary music at the ago of modernism, then this is for you.

Six And More
Podstawowa idea powstania sesji “SIX AND MORE” bylo, z jednej strony dostarczenie otwartej otwartej plaszczyzny wspólpracy dla muzyków zajmujacych sie muzyka elektroniczna o róznym charakterze, a z drugiej strony stworzenie takiego rodzaju elektronicznej muzyki, która moze byc realizowana tylko w jedyny dosc specyficzny sposob. To doprowadzilo do kilku spontanicznych serii sesji “SIX AND MORE”, w których muzycy oddzialywali na siebie podczas luznych kolektywnych improwizacji i tworzyli w ten sposób strukturalnie zawila pomyslowa i dynamiczna soniczna przestrzen - czysta komunikacja poprzez dzwiek - zywaelektronika! Twórczosc muzyków odzwierciedla prawdziwe zróznicowane obszarów elektronicznej muzyki i  sasiadujacych muzycznych terytoriów. Cztery pierwsze sesje “SIX AND MORE” zebrane na kompakcie “DO NOT OPEN!” zrealizowano w Monachium, nastepnie z Berlina (z wiosny 1993 roku) znajda sie na nastepnej plycie, ktora wyda 1995 roku wydawnictwo ARCHEGON (prowadzone przez inspiratora calego projektu - red.

Six And More Do Not Open! CD
This is a whole lot of musicians improvising sound with equipement such as digital and analog synth., G-midi improviser, E-bow, computers, tapes, ringmodulator, and so forth. If you can imagine these things being used by musicians influenced by the likes of Stockhausen, John Cage, and Edgar Varese you´ve got an idea of the poings on. Inside the CD booklet is a chart with the songs listed downthe left, musicians across the top, and nifty symbols representing the various instruments filled in accordingly. My favorite tracks are “Südwind” in which an unlikely human element(voice) trips in momentarily before being swallowed up by the modulating machines. Also “Gefährliche Essenzen” with its gadgets amok, one which sounds like it has the squirts.

Six And More Do Not Open! (ARCHEGON 1002)CD 68 minutes
I´m informed by the sleeve notes that the cover was designed by a committee. I´m afraid that some of the music here also sounds as though that were the case (and it generally is). The music is free jazz cum musique concrete all performed live, no overdubs, employing all manner of digital and analogue synths, plus guitar, bass, e-bow and voice triggered by a midi interface. My notes say thinks like “cosmic rock - free jazz microtonal digital ditherings” and Klaus Schulze meets Sun Ra on the net”. It´s maybe more helpful to suggest comparisons like Conrad Schnitzler and Wolfgang Hertz, although these soundscapes are more frantic and broken up. It will be interested to see how this collective develops, I was surprised by how much the music grew on me with repeated listenings. DH

Six And More - Do Not Open! CD 1993 (ARCHEGON)
This is a live recording which features 15 musicians on several electronic instruments, samplers, tapes and computers but even guitars, bass, e-bow and human voices. So most of all this is a live session which can be considered as a plattform of cooperation and communication between musicians involved in electronics, expressed through a free collective and live improvisation. And this is exactly the most impressive effect on this CD, namely how the musicians communicate with each other on stage to create a real homogenous concept. The pieces included on this CD, whichopens a series of future releases, vary from industrial to avandgarde and from atonal to more atmospheric soundscapes. Sometimes zappaesque and with influences by Xenakis or Varese and Luciano Berio the final result is not easy to be digested by the laity. But if you´re involved into the bizarre world of Contemporary and New Music, I´m sure you´re going to live it.

Godsend #2 1995
Six And More “Do Not Open!” CD
Improvised electronic/synth music resulting from a collaboration of 6 or more German musicians on each track. An interesting concept, and result is a hodgepodge of bloops & techno-tweaking. Some tracks are more chilled out and vaporous whilst others are stranger, detached, scattered, and almost jazzy in their quirky disarray. Dadaist music is still around, and Six And More is as weird and unpredictable as you´d ever want while still remaining listenable. Earjarring stuff.

Six And More - Do Not Open!

SIX AND MORE "Do Not Open" CD  (Archegon)
Again the title speaks for itself - this is an ideological and professional extension of the older project of the some people, Neglige. The number of musicians is growing up, so the complexity of work is changing proportionally. Especially the technical part, and the conception is similar to above. "Music for the six and more musicians" makes me think about Noise Factory and Kontakta, the projects known for their multiprofile teamwork compositions/improvisations. This is the way towards free from technology restrictions, instinctive and creative musical process and open conceptions. As far as the work goes, you have a chance to witness communication between 15 musicians. Using an impressive variety of sound making electronic devices, some of which are self-built as I can assume, the music is shifting between electroacoustic and experimental electronica fields. Together they create a small model of future society, drawn by abstract tonecolours on the sheet of audible sound frequency range. Some chaotic and shrinked sounds are implemented in full-emotion and ever-changing mood which is omnipresent beneath the sound exploring and contemplation. Dmitry Vasilyev

“Esplorazione sinestetica nell´ambito dell´immanenza tecnologica”

Six And More, “Do Not Open!” (CD - Archegon)
Markus Detmer

Six And More, “Do Not Open!” (Archegon CD, 68min)
musique Concrete in an lamost classic sense. Material is collectivly improvised in a group of at least six musicians using digital and analog synthesizers, samplers , tapes, etc. A balance between chaos and order, sound and silence is well maintained. Rather academic and restrained sounding, though it certainly gets noisy here at times. (SN)

New Hope International Review Vol. 18 #3 1995
Archegon Six And More: Do Not Open! 68 mins of unstructured music is pretty heavy going, and no-one can accuse Six & More of being easy listening. Anyone who enjoys the music of Stockhausen should identify with this. A group of up to 15 musicians play a variety of synths, samplers, computers, effects, percussion modules and ring modulators. The 14 tracks cover a wide range of sound sequences, though I wouldn´t call it music. (JMP)

Six And More: Do Not Open! CD (Archegon Label
Six And More, from ARCHEGON, is an open-ended series of sessions at which six and more musicians involved in electronic music would interact in a free collective improvisation to create an intricately structured, resourceful. and dynamic sonic space. This way provides musicians cooperation to develop new ideas, styles, and sounds. Also, the project participants will vary from session to session, thus continually enriching the music with the personal touches. The 1st S&M session, this CD, were held in MUNICH with these groups: Akwop, Ampersand, Ampzilla´s Delight, Ecco, Das Gelbe, Decks Run Red, Focus Pocus, Négligé -electronic underwear, Schultze & Schmidt, Triangle, Value Stress and Xerophyte. OIW has listened this work for you, so here are his impressions: Like ED. KA -SPEL, UNACD, UNIT 731 or F. LOPEZ “CRUSTOCEANIUM” productions, DO NOT OPEN! work shows us electronic experimentations between indus and jazz styles, “MUSIQUE CONCRETE” as said EDGAR VARESE. “This really cool live computermusic with 60´s academic feel sounds like a broken video game, very spacy and detached with his no conventional rhythms and melodies to pulse us in an electro seaside adventure full of brillant colours and textures where we will taste the sharpblue of electricity and smell the ozon. Noisy and chaotic but very fine!” said the ARCHEGON press-book. The last S&M session took place on 03/05/94 at the galery SIMULAKRUM, MAINZ. At this concert, 22 electro-musicians were improvising together. In order to provide even greater room for variation in set-up and setting, sessions in other cities are envisaged: Berlin in summer 1992 will be released in the next S&M CD in 1995. S&M concept is developed by ARCHEGON. This label provides a Mail-Order catalogue with both a production activity: The band NEGLIGE-ELECTRONIC UNDERWEAR and the S&M serie, both a distribution section with POINT OF YUCCA, SCHNITZLER, THOMASIUS and WIESBADENER IMPROVISATIONS ENSEMBLE. So for all experimental musics addicts, write for catalog!!!

GR

Six And More - Do Not Open! CD (ARCHEGON)
Six And More offer here recordings from live electronic improvisation sessions done by a collective of numerous musicians all gathering in the same room and individually creating a part of a sonic world they put into movement and make become a whole via free musical interaction! The result, you´ll guess it, is definitely unconventional and weirder than anything! It´s basically spacy with some invading analog bleebs here and there. Their work is so different from everything that you´d search in vain any drawer to throw them into! It´s so rare that I won´t even try to evaluate this cd. You´d tell me they come from another galaxy, I might believe it! Amazing initiative!!! Ask the label´s catalogue to: ARCHEGON. TSF

Six And More - Do Not Open! (ARCHEGON CD GON 1002)
This is crazy. Günter Schroth of Archegon encourages “Six And More”musicians into an open collaboration in a studio in Munich. The result is a truly innovative collection of approaches and sound generation fused into an improvised totally experimental musical strategy. The majority of contributing artists come from the “heterogeneous field of electronic music and of neighbouring musical territories” including Ampzilla´s Delight, Négligé-electronic underwear, Ecco, Focus Pocus, Xerophyte, Triangle and plenty more. “Pure communication by sound” well describes the huge variety evident on this final recording. The exchange of sounds bounce all around, some flung in, some hesitant and restrained, but the whole still present as a viable and demanding expression. Many “voices” standing up and speaking something clearly in tongues we barely understand but in a manner where we may collect some at least of that wealth. This is truly engaging and not at all as confusing as the dreative process (or strategy) might suggest. Buy it and indulge. J

The Improvisor 3/1996
Six And More - Do Not Open! Various Artists
This package claims that the sounds enclosed are “free collective improvisation” which is “intricately structured, resourceful and dynamic”. Also live with no overdubs. Reality: the material here is average-to-good- electronics with some moments that really live up to the liner note hype. Because of the collective, overlapping nature of this project, I find I can´t single out any musicians for praise. But that probably won´t bother this bunch of hive-minders. Happily industrial music in this alost inevitable result when you have six to ten techheads jamming on everything from MIDIs to ring modulators to E-bows to samplers. These folks clank, goof, amble, wash and shriek along in the looser realms of Factoryland. Sometimes they don´t rise above the better sci-fi soundtrack; we deserve better than that. But when things gel they´re fairly exciting, because theses people are in love with the alien peotential of high-tech. And when they realize that potential they make the frisson that we long for. -RG

Six And More - Do Not Open! (CD by Archegon)
Improvised music in combination with electronics is nothing new, but this group is large. Their most extensive concert had 20 members on stage. They produce improvised music with the use of computers, synthesizers aswell as conventional sound sources such as guitars. The problem with a lot of improvised music, is that it is hard to keep the attention of the listener. But it also produces great moments. Therefore this sort of music asks for a lot of attention (and I mean a lot!). This is a nice CD, with nice moments, with boring moments. But certainly one that deserves your attention. (FdW)
