Reviews of ”Fisch zum Frühstück” by Arbeitsgemeinschaft Fruchttanz und artverwandte Orgien

Aliens 05.10.2004
Arbeitsgemeinschaft Fruchttanz und Artverwandte Orgien (Germany) - Fisch zum Frühstück 2004, Archegon, CD (05.10.2004, ryby, )
For their time of existing has production Archegon many experimental artists and improvisators. This group of people is proof, what is possible to get from boxes, that offers minimal signal. Again, we're involved with anti - musical body, that brings us bright palette of frequencies, signals and sound patterns. Experimental flood in advanced study of chaos... . Peter Rybar

Aural Pressure 11/2004
Arbeitsgemeinschaft Fruchttanz und Artverwandte Orgien (Germany) - Fisch zum Frühstück 2004, Archegon, CD
Obviously, as an intrepid reviewer for a fearless organ like Aural Pressure, one tends to come across some pretty wacky music, as well as plenty of releases that are trying their hardest to be as strange as humanly possible, while actually coming across more like one of those irritating colleagues who would describe themselves as 'krazee' with a k and two e's without thinking twice about it. There is the occasional surprise in the line of duty that's genuinely disturbed or disturbing, much that sounds annoyingly conventional to one's jaded ears, and the odd album that would be pretentious if it wasn't so damn shoddy. But very few pieces have landed on my desk ever that are remotely as rabbitfish hatstand McStrawberry as this remarkable slice of teutonic insanity.
"Fisch zum Frühstück" ("fish for breakfast") is performed by four mental Germans with a completely straight face and a concealed sense of humour that puts most of their countryfolk to shame. Tobias Schmitt is better known as surrealistic noisemonger Suspicion Breeds Confidence. Claus van Bebber I could find nothing in English about. Günter Schroth looks like Dave Mustaine from Megadeth but makes music from product barcodes via homemade hardware contraptions and software filters. Antonia Grote-Scroth is credited with 'catering' and presumably provided the detailed recipe for Parsi-style chicken curry that is included in the CD booklet (with illustrations). Stir well, simmer over an open laptop while sprinkling on the the shredded Toop, add beef Stockhausen (from cubes if necessary), decant into Bladder Flask, improvise. Serves eight tracks; total cooking time, just under an hour.
I won't attempt to transcribe any of the track names as they're all long and complex German phrases, and it doesn't really matter because the breaks don't particularly correlate with any audible indications that one track has become the next. The ingredients run from randomised digital oscillators, clicks and flutters, to the chittering and squawking of electronic bestiaries and aviaries, from rhythmic scrapes and squeaks to leaden percussive thumps and lo-fi tape loops, all arranged sparsely yet with warmth and depth. One moment the sounds are distant and ghostly and the next you're entirely immersed. What's most striking is how refreshingly pleasant it all sounds, and not in a bad way. It's like the most obtrusive, antisocial experimental noise you can think of, only a joy to listen to. I think this one's going to become an old favourite.

Aversionline
Arbeitsgemeinschaft Fruchttanz und Artverwandte Orgien "Fisch Zum Frühstück" CD 7/10 - [Archegon]
I know nothing about this odd German collaboration, but from what I've been able to dig up, the four included parties are Claus van Bebber, Antonia Grote-Schroth (Credited with "catering" on this release!?), Günter Schroth (who makes music from barcodes in some way or another), and Tobias Schmitt (from Suspicion Breeds Confidence); and a few other reviews have referred to this as a "private happening" that combines "fine arts, catering, photography, and music". So one can only assume that the layout is a part of that statement, as it looks absolutely fucking beautiful. Aside from credits and a strange chicken recipe there's not much text, but all of the photography is absolutely awesome, especially the front cover, so it really does look exceptionally great. As far as the sound, expect eight long tracks (averaging right around seven minutes each) consisting of glitchy electronics that are fairly sparsely combined, so there's a lot of breathing room and the layering, while ever present, does come across as somewhat minimal.  There's a lot of shuffling motion, plenty of chaotic yet not too excessive cutup motions, digital blips and whirrs, some spacey ambience and brief samples, flitting midrange textures, R2-D2 sounding robotics, mechanical fidgeting, dry percussive sounds or areas that come across like manipulated field recordings, and much more. There's not a lot of spacing between the track divisions so it's hard to tell when one piece ends and another begins since things are pretty consistent as a whole and there's always a lot of shape-shifting going on, but more often than not there's enough of a significant shift that it becomes apparent – notably in the watery and somewhat more repetitious "Aufflammen Festlicher Inbrunst Beim Anblick des Dampfenden Mahls".  The longer "Raserei der Leidenschaft im Gemenge der Bellagen" (topping eight minutes) uses more of a dark ambient churn to its bassy undercurrents, and some of the foreground textures feel more restrained and somberly atmospheric as well, before eventually breaking up into a busier sort of twist ‘n' turn approach more connected to the surrounding compositions.  "Waghalsiges Begehren Fremder Kringel" briefly touches on some of the most sizzling distortion, but on the other hand hits on some ethereal ringing and lots of faint textures that border on silence, so… go figure! The sound quality is of course very nice as well.  There's a lot of crisp detail involved and despite sounding digital in general nature there's a lot of warmth and thickness to the low-end, so a good tonal range is represented and the mix benefits the spacious nature of the way the material is put together.  Nearly an hour in total length is a little much to a degree, and elements of this work seem like they might be more interesting to witness in a live setting (something about the feel of this stuff almost creates the impression that it is a live performance), but I have to give them credit for pulling this off stronger than most of this style of experimental noise that I encounter.  I wish they had included some sort of background information in the booklet as to what the hell this thing is really all about, but nonetheless the presentation really looks awesome and truly acts as an extension of the music in my opinion.  An odd release, but I like it. ARBEITSGEMEINSCHAFT FRUCHTTANZ UND ARTVERNANDTE ORGIEN Fisch zum Frühstück (Archegon, GON 1007):
O weh, deutscher Humor, brrrrr. ARBEITSGEMEINSCHAFT FRUCHTTANZ UND ARTVERNANDTE ORGIEN - FISCH ZUM FRUCHSTUCK  (8 song CD) ARCHEGON  I wasn't sure what to expect from this band, but looking at the bands name I knew it wouldn't be anything normal. This is some very strange & bizarre stuff here. The music has a very experimental & electronica type sound to it. It's a bunch of different noises & atmospheric sounding music. It almost sounds like it could be an acid trip. This is quite some weird stuff, but in a good way!!! Give it a listen!!!

Not knowing any German I can't tell you much about the names, titles or meaning of this album. All I know is my friend studied German at school and she didn't have a clue. So maybe all the names are made up. How knows? At least I can concentrate on the music that way. This is an playful electronic release that has the feel of an improvised recording that has been processed and adjusted later. The sounds seem to be manipulated in a turntablist style with elements quickly overlaid and mixed. The overall album has an excellent propulsion, a kind of irritable fidget that never lets sounds hang around for longer than a few minutes. The composition and playfulness is the most interesting thing here. Arbeitsgemeinschaft never seem to rely on drones or careful slow cross fading to get the point across. It's all done in seemingly chaotic way, that somehow never goes all the way into chaos, just stays balanced and interesting. Sometime the processing, pitching and delays do become a bit to apparent and one becomes aware of the construction behind the music. But this only happens occasionally. Recommended for those how like music with "attention deficient syndrome".

ARBEITSGEMEINSCHAFT FRUCHTTANZ UND ARTVERWANDTE ORGIEN "Fisch zum Fruhstuck" CD (Archegon) You probably know that german language is the vast treasure for anyone who like to use explicit words, especially if the ideolect is not enogh for emotions. Unsurpassed opportunity for expression but without offensive effect for those around you, and great psychological relaxation but also the extraordinary reputation! What should one think seeing the title of this new german project? Even if you are speaking german, it seems to be the lexical nonsense but it sounds! The similar associations are intended for the music - something very obscure and nervous, combined from electronic gadgetry, meal waste products and vinyl seasoning, protected by barcode and recorded in the real-time mode. The public catering soundtrack, to turn you away for ever from such kind of city comforts. Four musicians are listed as participants of this seminal project, but only the name of Gunter Schroth is known to me - he is the main person behind Six And More community and also released a solo album of barcodes music some time ago. His label Archegon is responsible for "live-electronics" music which is a cross between free improvisation and electronic media, providing absolutely free choice of sound sources - a lot of musicians are involved in this sets. Listening to this album, one can wonder if the composing process has a certain similarity with the cooking, and how much the result is depending from the experimental attitude of all members. What is more important - the process or the result? You decide.

In English
Label Archegon from Frankfurt am Main is one of those representatives of underground who care a little what is happening outside underground. Günter Schroth (driving force of the label) - the radical improvisator and the convinced conceptualist, one of his merits in history of conceptual avant guarde is barcode music - music, a resource for which are the sounds produced by scanners while reading the barcodes. The barcodes of the goods contain the sound structure, which it produces. If to have enough different goods and a pair of scanners, it is possible to receive though also impulsive, but quite a music.
"A fish for a breakfast" is an alive record of the happening of the group of the radical improvisators which have formed around of the label: Klaus van Webber, Antonia Grote-Schroth, Tobias Schmidt and Günter Schoth itself. The happening has been organized in honour of holiday Oy (what holiday is this?). During the celebration, the painting, photo, music have been involved and... Cooking. In general, considering gastronomic character of release (even on inset of a disk the recipe of some chicken dish is described in detail), it seems, that it or a sound-design of cooking process, or allegorical comparison with music production.
Undoubtedly it is an abstract electronic orgy, impenetrable and an absurd stream of consciousness. The sounds of musicalities appear from Betonmischer for seconds, often in intentionally not musical places. Such impression, that separate notes occasionally look in a room, some seconds with horror stare at an event, and then scaredly slam a door. They, in the meantime, are included in process also, and the sound of a door which they slam. Translation: O. Prokopovych

Presence in the name of the band a word of "orgy" has forced me to take advantage of the dictionary and to translate this sentence completely. (Unfortunately till now I still don't know German language!). Nothing special. Yes, if you yet haven't understood that it is the next project by Gunter Schroth, the chief of Archegon label, the preacher of so-called barcode-music and the leader of the crazy formation Six And More. Besides in this recording also participated Claus van Bebber (working with vinyl), electronician Tobias Schmitt and Antonia Grote-Schroth, who took duties not connected with making sounds on herself.
Generally, Gunter Schroth in his works does without unexpectedness - it is guaranteed that you will hear radical improvisatory music crossed with noise, electronics and academic avant guarde. This album didn't become an exception. However, in this case we have an opportunity to take pleasure in interaction of three completely different approaches to music, I even would tell - three concepts - after several interviews with the modern musicians read by me on the web-site by Rui Eduardo Paes, I haven't already trust in something like that!... Powerful, oversaturated with events and emotions music (nothing reminding porridge - every sound is on it's place and behind everyone the alive person is seen. Probably, it is because some persons made this record - if one make all this alone - the sound dump would turn out!), after which there is a fantastic feeling of emotional overheat and strong brain stimulation The disk has been recorded in two days - I would give much to participate on this orgy!!!, Pavel  Baleevsky

ARBEITSGEMEINSCHAFT FRUCHTTANZ UND ARTVERWANDTE ORGIEN – Fish Zum Frühstück – CD (Archegon)
This band with its impossible name consists of Claus von Bebber, Antonia Grote-Schroth, Tobias Smith and Günter Schroth. Günter Schroth plays “barcodes” on this CD. With a supermarket barcode scanner that he connects to instruments that he invented himself he produces all kind of strange electronic sounds. As he says himself on his website: “In each and every barcode there is hidden a melody or a sound structure strongly marked by the product on which the barcode sticks. By nature, the barcode on a can of Coca Cola sounds different from the barcode on a pack of cheese, of chocolate or of rolled oats.” I don’t know what products he plays on this CD but the result is very nice to listen to. What seems to be a gimmick at first turns out to be a completely new instrument that can be used in experimental electronic compositions very well. On the CD “Barcode Music” that he released in 2000 we hear a series of random sounds, not compositions. But on this CD the barcode-sounds are combined with all kind of other electronics to real compositions and that turns out very good. (MH)

ARBEITSGEMEINSHAFT FRUCHTTANZ UND ARTVERWANDTE ORGIEN, "Fisch Zum Frühstück"
Lately I've been getting a little bit tired of electronic experimental music, mainly because a lot of what I've been hearing has been dissapointing. Some projects seemed to have gotten lazy, relying on formula and the simplicity of the sounds they achieve to get them past the post. That's why listening to this album is a huge relief and even more exiting. I always know when I get something from Mr. Gunter Schroth, barcode-ician, it's going to be quality. Not just in terms of sound recording, engineering and so forth. But in sheer terms of pleasurable and imaginative music. Along with Claus van Bebber on vynal manipulation and Tovias Schmitt on electronics,  Gunter aims his distinctive barcode-derived sound into a suite of pieces that work brilliantly as accomplished compositions. Regardless of how much was improvised, pre-planned and/or fucked with in the mix, this really is an amazing album that seems to change with each listen. A certain drama under the music; brown sepia tones that mix without loosing their own distinction. Lovely vynal crackle underlays much of the music, changing in itself from sparkling to scraping. These people are musicians, fully aware of the sounds their producing and with an ear for the finished piece as it unfolds. The sound shys away from getting to noisy but never degenerates into pulpy "ambient"; the control they have allows this music to breathe. This is what experimental electronic music should be; this is the benchmark.

ARBEITSGEMEINSCHAFT FRUCHTTANZ UND ARTVERWANDTE ORGIEN - Fisch zum Frühstück (Archegon)
This difficult project springs from the minds of Claus Van Bebber, Antonia Grote-Schroth, Tobias Schmitt and Günter Schroth; it is a soundtrack for a private happening, held in Oy in 2003, combining fine arts, catering, photography and music. Those who have a sense of nausea when receiving a continuously changing sound stimulation should not even try to get near this unbelievable computerized pastiche: by accident or by conceptual choice, everything moves at a frantic pace while blankets of electronic shifts, crazed samples and a persevering tortured electroacoustic enigma do their best to destroy any form or scheme that could help the brain to acclimatize for more than five seconds. This decentralization is both attractive and puzzling, managing to dethrone common expectations by creating incessant dichotomies and antagonisms whose lack of solution is the main moving force after the basic idea.
L'ennesimo collettivo con l'onnipresente Gunter Schroth, label manager e artista presente in tutti i lavori Archegon recensiti fin ora. - urbanspaceman

Ventrilocution
Arbeitsgemeinschaft Fruchttanz Und Artverwandte Orgien - Frish Zum Frühstück (Archegon, 2004)
Wer genießt Fische zum Frühstück? The answer to this question is, despite its apparent oddness, quite simple: Claus, Antonia, Tobias und Günter. A fearsome foursome of Teutonic musical pioneers wield their sharp weapons mercilessly through ∑length=53’51’’ of polished and blistering aural mayhem. Frish Zum Frühstück is a simple particular case of a soundtrack to a film directed randomly by machinery through fuzzy logic circuits with non-linear movement equations highly sensible, as all true chaotic systems, to the preset initial conditions. The infinity of possible results is not contemplated anywhere within these 50-ish minutes of sampled histrionics, as it displays the path taken through the circuits by choosing values between 0 and 1, a finite process that has an exogenously determined conclusion.
In a less formal view, Frish Zum Frühstück implies a heightened level of intellectual communication only accessible to yours truly in sparse and very homogeneous closed sets wherein the complexity of the stimuli is reduced in order to facilitate the perception and absorption of a given message. That equals saying that regardless of how intricate and complicated the sounds may appear throughout the whole of the album, some small segments and portions assume appealing forms whose familiar apparel reduce the strain induced on one’s brain cells. Such is the case with the 7 th finite interval constitutive of the album, the comparatively small “Waghalsiges Begehren fremder Kringel”, which frailly assembles comprehensible rhythmic patterns.
Thus, if mitigating a profound hankering for truly exigent art forms is somewhat of a full-time occupation for the avid reader of these lines, a project of active experimentation such as this one is sure to alleviate and lighten that task for a considerable amount of time. As for everyone else, I strongly recommend you not to experience anything further than deliciously looking Jardaloo Murghi (Chicken Parsi style) recipe and photo presented right on the second page of the booklet. Bon appetite. By Pedro Serôdio (06/2005)

Arbeitsgemeinschaft Fruchttanz Und Artverwandte Orgien - "Fisch zum Frühstück" (CD) - Archegon Records [Reviewed by: GunHed]
With quite possibly the longest band name ever, Arbeitsgemeinschaft Fruchttanz Und Artverwandte Orgien (which I'm sure means something, but I'm too lazy to translate) is the project of 4 people, but I only recognize one name, Tobias Schmitt (who is responsible for the amazing project Suspicion Breeds Confidence). "Fisch zum Frühstück," the bands first album is a collection of twisted experimental soundscapes that utilize a variety of electronic sources. Everything from vinyl pops and cracks, low-fi tape loops, static transmissions and scraping factory sounds. All these elements are converged into an almost random, improvised field of sound, that at times, borders on going completely off into chaos, but then soon resets and changes direction. The music (if you can call it that) never quite gets to the point of Powernoise but it never falls into the dark abyss of being Ambient. The band expertly treads a middle ground that they own so perfectly. The sounds create such weird images in my head, like an alien orbiting space, changing channels every 2 seconds, bouncing from one satellite transmission to the next. This is strange music, folks, made by even stranger individuals. They even include a recipe for chicken in the liner notes (laughs). "Fisch zum Frühstück" contains 54 minutes
